Description of CKM Teaching Innovations

There are several inter-linked innovative components that comprise the complete learning environment necessary to achieve success, including:
  • Internet-based course syllabus and asynchronous daily communication
  • Internet text (under development--most sections have some active links)
  • Interactive text in Computer Lab to aid in Computer Classwork exploratory problem solving
  • Two hardcopy workbooks to accompany the interactive text for the Computer Lab
  • The calculus content has been re-written to introduce and reinforce the mathematics through significant, interesting kinetic modeling situations
  • Mathematical visualizations through extensive use of plots and animations to aid students in more quickly and intuitively grasping the mathematical concepts
  • The Mastery TASK System of Assessment with weekly tests, retests, and revisions, is used to keep the students engaged and successful through learning by doing and continuous assessment
  • Course specific student evaluation questions, with written responses only, are designed/revised to elicit continuous student feedback through constructive criticism on how to improve the course for future students
This course addresses level one students in the first year of the curriculum. For a more detailed description of the process please view the portfolio sections through the links at left, prefixed by CKM.
