Student Course Evaluations:
MA1100 Calculus, SPRING 1998

Note that in the academic year 1997-98 our college dean asked all faculty to try designing their own course evaluation questions. Mine are below (for a description of my rationale and my first attempt at this, visit the links for Fall 1995).

Select a Question: 1. , 2. , 3. , 4. , 5. , 6.  or 7.

1. The MTS (Mastery TASK System) was used as the primary method of assessment and grading. The MTS is a learning-by-doing approach with continuous assessment using weekly TASK Performances and Revisions. Please describe whether or not the MTS helped your math learning and/or your grade in the course.

Yes it helped me because before a test, I would go over the task previous to the exam.

Yes it helped me learn and helped my grade.

It helped me because it is repetitious.

It helped me a lot

Yes, taking a task every week helped to reinforce the material.

I liked the MTS and the weekly Performances. The revisions really helped my grade and helped me to understand the material.

Yes, it helped me because if I didn't understand something, I could come back and correct my mistakes.

The MTS did help my understanding and grade in the course because it gave me a chance to improve my performance if I needed a second chance.

MTS helped my math learning because it tells you exactly what you need to do.

Yes I think it helped me. It also helped my grade because if you didn't understand something, you can do a revision and raise your grade.

Yes, I find it easier since there is no cramming for a bigh test covering 3 or 4 things. You can relax and take each task individually.

It helped me because I learned it both ways--on the computer and in class.

MTS helped math learning and my grade by repetition.

I really enjoyed this system, and I've learned a lot--and my grade in the class is good.

It helped my math grade but not my learning on most things because the students memorize the procedure until the task but do not learn the concepts.

I believe it helped because I learned the material better.

No it didn't. I learn better when I'm taught by a teacher and can take notes.

The MTS is a good system. Although, I felt that sometimes we were moving too fast. A lot of times no one in class knew how to do the work for the tasks.

Yes it helped because it let me see what I did wrong and I learned how to do it from my mistakes. It helped my grade a lot. It helped me to keep higher because even if I made dumb mistakes on the task and lost points on it, I would still be all right.

Yes this helped my learning. By getting the chance to do a revision, I learned what I didn't know on the performance. Therefore I got the total concept of the lesson (CCW).

2. For most of the TASK Performances, students graded each other's TASKs and then, if necessary, a Revision for the TASK was done for homework. Comment on how you thought this worked.

I thought this idea was great because it gave us another chance to see what we did wrong.

Worked well.

It worked out well because you could see commonly made mistakes.

It worked pretty good because it was fast, but we didn't have as much time to take the tasks, that was the only bad thing.

It worked out well because you found out your results immediately and could take care of what you had trouble with then.

It helped a lot. Although sometimes I didn't want others to see my papers.

This worked excellent because we went over what we got wrong so you know how to fix your mistakes.

I thought this worked very well for the same reasons [I listed] as above.

I thought that worked fine--"A". Revision is needed because if they don't understand on the task, then they will get it by the time they do Revisions.

If I didn't understand a part, then I usually figured it out after I looked and did the revision.

It seemed to go well.

I think that it worked O.K. because you can see what errors you made right away and learn from them.

Task revisions for homework did not benefit my learning as much as task revisions taken in a testing format [Encores].

I think this worked good--It gave the students a chance to see why they got the questions wrong.

The grading went okay but there were often questions on what was wrong and how many points to take off for each wrong one. Also, some student graders are not as difficult as others.

I felt that this procedure worked well, althought I'm a type of person that would like to keep tests that way, I can gauge how I am doing in the class. Doing this as homework reinforces what you know and don't know.

I don't think peer grading had any effect.

I personally think it is bad to let the students grade. Not only because it puts some students in a bad situation but also because you personally [the instructor] can give better partial credit when things are messed up through chain work. Revisions are great!

I loved having the revisions as homework, much better than the encores. I learned more from it. Didn't like having students grade our papers.

I really didn't like grading or having others grade mine. It seemed like too much confusion, and it didn't teach me anything.

3. Please describe whether or not you felt that using CCWs (Computer Classworks) was a helpful way to introduce new concepts and/or visualize the math ideas.

No because you just jotted down things off the computer not knowing what you did.

No. CCW did not help.

CCW didn't help much because it really wasn't the same thing as the tasks.

Most of the Computer Classworks were helpful to me.

Yes, I enjoyed working on the computers in a different way.

I didn't like CCWs. In class, work was better.

Yes it gave you a chance to grasp the concept and then actually learn it in class.

Yes, I thought the computer was very helpful in actually seeing and understanding the problems.

Yes CCW was a very helpful way to introduce new concepts and visualize math ideas.

Yes, it shows you how to do things and how to calculate your answer.

The CCWs are good for an introduction, but further explanation is usually needed for complete understanding of the material.

I think it was because you can actually see some things that can't be explained.

Computer Classwork was very beneficial in the visualizations of math ideas.

I think it is a good way to get familiar with the concepts--but, overall, it didn't make a big difference in the way I understood the math.

Not really because he lectured the whole hour and we never really had a chance to get any work done in class or ask him any questions.

TheCCWs was a helpful way for me in learning the concepts.

If you understand the material, CCWs help. If not, then you just write whatever is on the screen.

The Computer Classworks are helpful in order to visualize ideas.

It just depended on the task.

Yes it did--I need practice to help me learn.

4. The one thing I liked most about this course is:

Revisions.

Chance for revision.

The repetition of everything.

Being able to revise the tasks and midterms.

Being able to take a revision.

Revisions.

Revisions.

The chance to do revisions.

The way you [the instructor] introduce concepts and computer work.

The revision if you messed up.

The utilization of the school's computers for teaching.

Having a revision, because that is like a second chance when you can learn from your errors and also get a better grade.

The one thing that was most beneficial in this course was the repetition of problems in the classroom setting.

That the tasks are the same [format] as the practice tasks and what you have learned. There are no surprises when you get the task.

The were easy to do good on.

I like this course because it shows you why Calculus is important and how you will use it later in life.

The way the class is run, how the tests are done, and revisions.

The tasks at the end of the week and revisions as homework.

Being able to take revisions!

Select a Question:  1. , 2. , 3. , 4. , 5. , 6.  or 7.

5. The one thing I woud most liked to see changed is:

Computer Classwork.

Nothing.

To be in the Computer Lab more than just once a week.

Computer Classwork.

Nothing.

Lecture.

A straightforward midterm.

Some more time in Computer Lab--maybe an hour and a half.

Nothing, besides more use of graphing calculators.

Nothing.

The students need to learn the concepts.

More instruction by the teacher, not the computer. Revisions--they aren't helpful when the answers are stapled to the back.

Student grading and speed.

A little less Computer Classwork.

No more Computer Labs and more work in the class on the board.

Select a Question:  1. , 2. , 3. , 4. , 5. , 6.  or 7.

6. Reflect on whether or not you feel that you gave your best effort in the course, and if not, what do you think you might have done differently that could have improved your math learning?

Yes, I gave my best effort.

Studied more.

I think for the most part I gave my best effort.

I gave my best effort.

I could have taken the CCW more seriously.

Study more.

I gave my best effort.

Yes, I did try my best.

I could have studied more for all the task performances.

Yes I did. I tried to learn everything taught.

I gave it my best.

I think I gave enough effort.

I gave my best effort.

Yes, I did rather well.

I feel I have given my best effort in this class.

I don't think I gave my best effort--I couldn't concentrate in the Computer Lab-->where most of the material is presented.

I feel I gave a very good effort!

I tried to do my best. Sometimes there was another exam, and I didn't study as hard as I should have.

I feel I worked my best in this course.

Select a Question:  1. , 2. , 3. , 4. , 5. , 6.  or 7.

 7. Any other suggestions for improvement, regarding the instructor, course content, or structure?

No.

No.

This was an excellent course, with an excellent instructor

None.

None.

Talk a little slower.

Not really. Pretty good how it is set up now.

None.

I think the class is fine as it is.

None.

Graphing calculators are very helpful!

Slow down! Maybe have a short worksheet to help learn for the task.

The instructor needs to learn how to communicate with students when they come with questions or for help.
