The Future

No one knows what the future holds but in the field of genetics and designer babies we can make good guesses about what is to come.  Years ago we would never it thought it possible to map the human DNA much less use that information to prevent children who are not even born yet.

Scientists say that we may be be able but a defense against HIV in a fetus.  Recently, scientists have discovered 2 genes which may be causes of breast cancer, BRCA1 and BRCA2.  This development should mean earlier detection of breast cancer and therefore more successful treatments.  It could also allow for preventative actions to be taken in women who are found to have the genes.  These genes are also found in women with ovarian cancer.  These finding are amazing and as time goes on more and more genes will be found.

Gene therapy is very close to becoming a reality.  This would allow for replacement of the missing enzyme in Tay-Sachs disease, the missing hormone in diabetes or the repair of the defective gene in hemophilia or Huntington's disease.  This could eventually lead to the eradication of diseases that have plagued our society.

The possibilities for genetic testing and designer babies are endless.  We would hope that one day all genetic disorders could be prevented before birth of a child.  The limits of what we can do is going to one day depend on the limits of our imagination
